Porto de Galinhas is in Ipojuca, on the southern coast of Pernambuco, and has no airport of its own. For almost every visitor, the trip has two stages: getting to Recife and covering the stretch to the beach. According to Ipojuca City Hall, it’s about 60 km south of Recife airport, around an hour by car via the PE-009.

By plane: arriving via Recife

The reference airport is Recife/Guararapes–Gilberto Freyre International Airport, operated by Aena. It receives flights from several Brazilian state capitals and international flights. Transport options from arrivals are detailed in Recife airport to Porto de Galinhas.

By car

Ipojuca City Hall recommends the PE-009 as the access road to Porto de Galinhas from the airport. Broadly, leaving Recife you head south on the BR-101 and then take the access road to the southern coast, passing through the Suape Complex area to the village.

  • Rota do Atlântico (PE-009): a concession stretch with a toll. It is usually the most direct route. According to Diario de Pernambuco, the concessionaire provides an ambulance, tow trucks for light and heavy vehicles and 24-hour road user assistance.
  • Alternative routes: pass through urban areas of Cabo de Santo Agostinho and Ipojuca, with more traffic lights and traffic. Ipojuca City Hall mentions the PE-060 as the access road to the municipality’s historic center.

Use a navigation app with real-time traffic, especially on Fridays, the day before public holidays and Sunday afternoons. The toll is adjusted periodically; check the current rate before setting off.

By metropolitan bus

The Grande Recife metropolitan system has two lines to Porto de Galinhas. According to the official fare table, consulted in October 2026:

Line Type Fare (Oct 2026)
191 Recife/Porto de Galinhas No air conditioning R$ 14.80
195 Recife/Porto de Galinhas Optional, with air conditioning R$ 22.50

According to a Diario de Pernambuco report from November 2024, both lines began running their first trips from the Cais de Santa Rita Terminal, in central Recife. Route, stops and timetable change. Confirm with the Grande Recife Consortium before traveling.

The bus is the cheapest option, but it’s slower than a car and less practical with a lot of luggage.

Taxi, ride-hailing app and transfer

Ipojuca City Hall lists taxi, ride-hailing apps, private transfers and executive buses as ways to get there from the airport or central Recife.

Option Advantage Watch out for
Taxi Available at the airport, 24 hours, according to Aena Agree on meter or fixed price
Ride-hailing app Practical, with an estimated price in the app Surge pricing at peak times
Transfer Booked in advance, door to door Confirm whether it’s private or shared

On the road

  • Check traffic before leaving Recife. Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings are usually the busiest times.
  • On days of heavy rain, common between April and July, slow down and pay extra attention.
  • Keep the rental car’s documents at hand and respect the posted speed limits.
  • When you arrive, ask your accommodation where to park safely.

From other cities in the Northeast

Drivers coming from other states also arrive via the BR-101, which runs along the northeastern coast, and continue to the southern coast of Pernambuco. Plan your stops and avoid driving stretches at night.

Once you arrive

The village of Porto de Galinhas is compact and easy to get around on foot. Muro Alto, Cupe, Maracaípe and Serrambi require a car, taxi, ride-hailing app or buggy ride. That’s why your choice of base changes the logistics of the trip.

Between Muro Alto and the village

Muro Alto is about 9 km north of the village, and Ipojuca City Hall mentions car, buggy and taxi to get there. Editor’s recommendation:

Trip Best option
Daytime, village ↔ Muro Alto or Cupe Ride-hailing app or taxi
Dinner in the village and a late return Your own car, a pre-arranged taxi or the hotel’s transfer
Seeing several beaches on the same day Buggy ride
On foot along the road Not recommended

In the village, Jovem Pan notes that the tourist center restricts cars and is easily explored on foot. Before heading out on outings, see how to avoid tourist traps in Porto de Galinhas. Compare the areas in where to stay and get to know the village of Porto de Galinhas.
