Even in the driest period, a cloudy day can come along. And between April and July, rain is part of the trip. According to INMET’s 1991-2020 Climate Normals for Recife, the nearest reference station (INMET is Brazil’s national weather institute), June is the rainiest month, averaging about 390 mm and 22 rainy days. With a plan B, a rainy day is not a lost day.
First, rearrange your plans
Rain usually comes in showers, with breaks. Before canceling everything:
- Check the forecast from APAC, the state water and climate agency, and the radar on your phone.
- Look at the tide table. If the next morning’s low tide is good and the forecast improves, swap your days. Details in when to go.
- Ask the jangadeiros. They assess visibility and the sea on the day.
- Use the sunny windows. Keep your beach bag ready to go when the weather clears.
What to do in the village
Porto de Galinhas village is the best refuge. Everything is close by and there are many covered places.
- Shopping for handicrafts and souvenirs. Shops with the famous chickens and other local pieces. See shopping in Porto de Galinhas.
- An unhurried lunch. Peixada (fish stew), seafood and Pernambuco sweets.
- Coffee with bolo de rolo or tapioca. A simple plan while you wait for the rain to pass. Bolo de rolo is a thin rolled cake with guava paste; tapioca is a filled flatbread made from cassava starch.
- Photos with the chicken sculptures scattered around the village, which Ipojuca City Hall recommends, during a break in the rain.
Ipojuca’s historic center
The town that is the seat of the municipality (Ipojuca is the municipality Porto de Galinhas belongs to) holds the history of the sugar mills and of how Ipojuca took shape. A visit to the Ipojuca historic center is an alternative for a day without the beach. Confirm visiting hours for churches and other sites before you go.
Day trip to Recife and Olinda
On a full day of rain, cities with museums, cultural centers and covered areas are good options. Recife and Olinda offer historic heritage, cultural centers and food. The trip is long for a single day, so leave early and check the forecast. See the planning in Recife and Olinda day trip.
At your hotel or pousada
Resorts in Muro Alto and Cupe usually have a leisure program, covered areas and activities for children. Smaller pousadas (guesthouses) offer fewer facilities, but the village is close. On rainy days, rest and a long meal are part of the trip too.
What you can do in light rain
| Activity | In light rain | In heavy rain |
|---|---|---|
| Walking around the village | Yes, with a light rain jacket | Choose covered places |
| Beach without swimming | Possible | Avoid |
| Natural pools | Depends on the sea and visibility | Generally not recommended |
| Buggy ride | Depends on the operator | Avoid; dirt roads get worse |
| Shopping and food | Yes | Yes |
| Day trip | Yes | Yes, with care on the road |
With children on a rainy day
Children feel being stuck in the room more. Alternate short activities: a walk around the village during a break in the rain, an ice cream, shops with the colorful chickens and an unhurried meal. Resorts with covered areas and kids’ activities help a lot on these days. Avoid dirt roads and long buggy rides while it is raining hard.
What to pack for the rainy season
- A light rain jacket or a compact umbrella.
- Sandals that can get wet.
- A dry bag for your phone and documents.
- Quick-dry clothing.
Is it worth going in the rainy season?
It is if you are flexible and happy to swap activities between days. Temperatures stay high and the sea is around 27 °C (about 81 °F) all year, according to Ipojuca City Hall. With a flexible itinerary, rain is just one more adjustment.
