Water that stays warm all year, around 27 °C (about 81 °F) according to Ipojuca City Hall, and reef-sheltered areas make Porto de Galinhas appealing for families. The key is to match your plans to the tide and keep up the usual precautions with sun, sea and coral.
Why it works for families
- Calm water in sheltered areas. The line of reefs reduces waves along several stretches, especially at low tide.
- Shallow natural pools. At low tide, they form pockets of clear water with fish, a memorable experience for children.
- A compact village. Restaurants, ice cream parlors and shops are close by, with no long trips.
- Family-friendly accommodation. Resorts in Muro Alto and Cupe usually have kids’ areas and swimming pools.
Beaches and outings for the family
| Place or outing | Why it is good with children | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Natural pools | Shallow water and fish in plain sight at low tide | Coral cuts; the tide comes back in |
| Muro Alto Beach | A reef barrier creates an area of calm water | Check the depth before letting your child go |
| Main village beach | Facilities, shade and services nearby | Heavy crowds in high season |
| Jangada (traditional raft boat) ride | Short and visual | Ask for a children’s life jacket |
| Seahorses in Maracaípe | Wildlife watching in nature | Boat ride; confirm the safety rules |
| Buggy ride | Visits several beaches in one day | Heat and a long time for little ones |
A basic family day plan
- Early: check the tide table and go to the pools at the morning low tide.
- Late morning: a calm beach with shade and a snack.
- Lunch and rest: avoid the strongest sun, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., as INCA, Brazil’s National Cancer Institute, recommends.
- Late afternoon: a stroll around the village and an ice cream.
- Evening: an early dinner and rest.
Safety in the sea and on the reefs
- Constant supervision. Even in shallow water, children should be within arm’s reach of an adult.
- Life jackets for children who cannot swim well yet, including on the jangada.
- Water shoes to protect feet from coral and rocks.
- Do not step on or touch the coral and do not feed the fish, as Ipojuca City Hall asks. It is a good conservation lesson for little ones.
- Swim near lifeguards and respect the flags.
- Avoid beaches with strong waves for children, such as the surf stretches in Maracaípe.
CEMIT, the state committee on shark incidents, recommends choosing reef-sheltered areas and lower tides. More guidance in Porto de Galinhas safety.
Sun and heat
INCA recommends avoiding the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. and wearing a hat, clothing that covers the skin and sunscreen. For children, UV-protective shirts help a lot. Offer water all the time and take breaks in the shade.
Where to stay with children
- Muro Alto and Cupe: resorts with full facilities and calm beaches. You depend on transportation to reach the village.
- The village: everything is close and the jangadas leave just steps away. It can be noisier at night.
- Apartment-hotels and vacation homes: good for large families, with a kitchen.

Traveling with babies
With babies, the pace is different. Choose calm beaches near your accommodation, very early hours and shade at all times. Bring swim diapers if you will go in the sea, and a beach umbrella. Before using sunscreen on babies, follow your pediatrician’s advice. The jangada ride to the pools is short, but check with the jangadeiros that there is a life jacket in the right size before boarding.
When to go with children
July and January coincide with Brazilian school holidays and bring bigger crowds. July falls in the rainiest period, according to INMET climate normals for Recife. If you can, choose drier months outside school holidays and pick days with low tide in the morning.
