Muro Alto is the beach that makes many people choose Porto de Galinhas. A wall of reefs runs along almost the entire shoreline and holds back the waves on the outside. On the inside you get a huge natural pool of calm, warm, clear water, where you can float, swim and watch fish without dealing with breaking surf. The name itself means “high wall” in Portuguese.

Wikipedia gives the beach a length of about 3 km and describes this pool as the largest in Latin America. It is also where Ipojuca’s (the municipality Porto de Galinhas belongs to) big resorts are, so it draws families and anyone who wants to spend the whole day in the water.

Why the beach is called Muro Alto

The name comes from the large wall of reefs that surrounds almost the entire length of the beach, forming a natural barrier, as Ipojuca City Hall describes it. This wall is what turns the sea into a pool: the waves break on the outside and, on the beach side, the water stays still most of the day.

Unlike the natural pools off the village, which you visit by jangada (a traditional wooden sailboat) for a few hours, in Muro Alto the “pool” starts right at the edge of the sand. No boat or tour needed: just walk into the water.

Where it is and how to get there

Muro Alto sits at the northern end of Ipojuca’s tourist coast, between Porto de Galinhas and the Suape Port Complex.

  • From Recife airport: via the PE-009, about 50 km and roughly 1 hour by car, according to Ipojuca City Hall. See your transport options in Recife airport to Porto de Galinhas.
  • From Porto de Galinhas village: about 9 km to the north. Go by car, taxi or ride-hailing app, or include Muro Alto in a buggy ride along the northern beaches.

The beach is next to Cupe: the two pair well on the same day.

Public access to the sand

This is the point that raises the most questions. Every Brazilian beach is public property for common use, with free access guaranteed by Federal Law 7,661/1988, and that applies to Muro Alto too. But the shoreline is almost entirely taken up by resorts, hotels and gated communities, and access for people coming from outside is limited.

According to Diário de Pernambuco, the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office opened an inquiry in 2025 into the difficulty of public access to the beach. The inspection cited in the report found:

  • public access points very far apart: about 910 meters between access points 7 and 8, 750 meters between 8 and 9, and 600 meters between 9 and 10;
  • access streets partly blocked by landfill, vegetation and walls;
  • stretches where high tide covers the entire beach and pedestrians cannot get through.

The report also notes that the state coastal management law calls for access lanes at least 4 meters wide, and that Ipojuca City Hall has drawn up proposals for new lanes.

In May 2026, the Pernambuco courts responded, according to Diário de Pernambuco: in a public civil action brought by the Pernambuco Public Prosecutor’s Office, a court ordered Ipojuca City Hall to guarantee public access to Muro Alto and Camboa beaches in its planning and environmental permits. The ruling also requires the municipality to clean, clear, signpost and monitor the existing access points, with signs stating that access is free. The decision can be appealed and implementation takes time: check the situation on site.

When to go: the tide decides

Ipojuca City Hall recommends low tide, when the water behind the reef wall is extremely calm and clear. At high tide the pool gets deeper, the sea can wash over parts of the reefs and, as noted above, the sand disappears in some spots.

Plan with the Porto de Galinhas tide table, based on the official Brazilian Navy forecast for the Port of Suape, the reference port closest to Muro Alto. If your trip has only a few good low-tide days, decide in advance which ones go to the village pools and which to Muro Alto.

Things to do in Muro Alto

Ipojuca City Hall lists these activities on the beach:

  • swimming in the pool behind the reef wall;
  • walks along the shore (preferably at low tide);
  • kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding, taking advantage of the still water;
  • jet skiing and banana boat rides;
  • snorkeling, with a mask, to watch the fish.

According to the same source, the beach has beachfront restaurants, kiosks and stalls with regional food, as well as the resorts’ own facilities. Services, prices and opening hours change with the season.

Muro Alto with kids

It is the most popular beach with families in Ipojuca, and Ipojuca City Hall considers it ideal for young children because the water is calm and safe. Some rules still apply:

  • supervision at all times, even in shallow water;
  • a float or life jacket for anyone who is not a strong swimmer;
  • water shoes help you avoid cutting your feet on the reefs and protect the coral;
  • shade and sunscreen: the sun is strong all year round.

Stay in Muro Alto or in the village?

Many visitors choose to stay in Muro Alto precisely for the beach. The trade-off is simple: you get the natural pool on your doorstep and lose the walkable life of the village, with its restaurants, shops and the jangada departures. To get to the village, go out at night or visit the natural pools, you will need a car, taxi or transfer. The full comparison is in where to stay in Muro Alto and where to stay in Porto de Galinhas.

Environmental and safety tips

The sea at Muro Alto lies within the Serrambi Reefs Marine Environmental Protection Area, created by the Pernambuco state government in 2018 and managed by the state environmental agency CPRH. The reefs in the wall are alive:

  • do not step on or touch the coral;
  • do not feed the fish;
  • do not take shells or animals;
  • take all your trash with you.

How to fit it into your itinerary

  • A full day: arrive early at low tide, enjoy the pool in the morning and have lunch on the beach or at a day-use. In the afternoon, if the tide allows, walk to Cupe.
  • Half a day: combine Muro Alto with Cupe and Merepe Beach on a buggy ride along the north coast.
  • Staying in Muro Alto: set aside one low-tide day for the village natural pools and another for the south, with Maracaípe and sunset at the Pontal.

See how to spread it all out in our 2- to 7-day itineraries.

Practical tips

  • Pick your day by the low tide: that is when the water behind the reef wall is calmest, shallowest and clearest.
  • Arrive in the morning and plan your walk along the sand before the tide comes in: in some stretches the water covers the whole beach.
  • Not staying in Muro Alto? The beach is public. Use the public access lanes or look for a day-use pass.
  • Bring a snorkel mask to watch the fish while floating, without standing on the reefs.
  • Never try to cross the reef wall toward the open sea.
