Recife/Guararapes–Gilberto Freyre International Airport is the gateway for travelers heading to Porto de Galinhas. It is operated by Aena. According to Ipojuca City Hall, the beach is about 60 km south of the airport, around an hour by car via the PE-009.
Options at a glance
| Option | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Taxi | Leaving quickly without a booking | Agree on how the fare will be charged first |
| Ride-hailing app | Those who already use one and want an estimated price | Surge pricing at peak times and on holidays |
| Pre-booked transfer | Families, groups and night arrivals | Check whether it’s private or shared |
| Rental car | Exploring the region | Toll road and parking at the beaches |
| Metropolitan bus | Tight budgets and light luggage | Slower; confirm stop and timetable |
Taxi
According to Aena, the airport has regular taxis at the north and south arrivals areas and special taxis at the south arrivals area, both 24 hours. Before getting in, ask whether the fare will be by meter or a fixed price to Porto de Galinhas.
Ride-hailing app
Ipojuca City Hall lists ride-hailing apps among the ways to get there. The app shows the estimated price before you confirm. When many flights arrive at once, the fare may rise and the wait may get longer. Follow the airport signs to the ride-hailing pickup point.
Transfer
Private transfers are offered by agencies and by many places to stay. The advantage is arriving with everything sorted, even at night. When booking, confirm:
- whether the service is private or shared, which may stop at several hotels;
- what happens if your flight is delayed;
- whether the price is per person or per vehicle;
- whether there are child seats, if needed.
This guide does not recommend companies. Prefer formally registered providers with verifiable reviews.
Rental car
There are rental agencies at the airport. Drivers head south and take the PE-009, recommended by Ipojuca City Hall. The concession stretch, the Rota do Atlântico, has a toll. According to Diario de Pernambuco, the concessionaire provides an ambulance, tow trucks and 24-hour road user assistance. Details of the route and the old road are in how to get to Porto de Galinhas.
Car, transfer or app: which to choose
| Rental car | Pre-booked transfer | Ride-hailing app | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | Staying in Muro Alto, Cupe or Serrambi and getting around on your own | Families, night arrivals, early return flights | Short daytime trips and light travelers |
| Advantage | Freedom for day trips | Guaranteed time, door to door | Estimated price before confirming |
| Weak point | Toll and parking in the village | Must be booked ahead | Surge pricing and waits at peak times |
- Staying in the village: Jovem Pan notes that the tourist center restricts car traffic and is easily explored on foot. Editor’s recommendation: if you’re staying in the village, the car will likely sit idle and parking is hard; use a transfer on arrival and tours or the app the rest of the time.
- Staying in Muro Alto, Cupe or Serrambi: Ipojuca City Hall mentions car, buggy or taxi to reach Muro Alto, about 9 km from the village. Editor’s recommendation: here a car makes more sense, for dinner in the village and day trips such as Carneiros or Cabo de Santo Agostinho.
Metropolitan bus
Lines 191 and 195 Recife/Porto de Galinhas belong to the Grande Recife Consortium system. According to the official fare table consulted in October 2026, the fare was R$ 14.80 on the 191 and R$ 22.50 on the 195, the optional air-conditioned service.
The boarding point near the airport, the route and the timetable change over time and are not detailed in this guide. Confirm with the Grande Recife Consortium before relying on this option. It is the cheapest alternative, but also the slowest.
The airport also has a metro station on the South Line, according to Aena, useful if you’re going to Recife first.
How much time to allow
The official estimate is about an hour by car. In practice, add a margin for:
- baggage claim and the line at the taxi rank or rental desk;
- traffic leaving Recife at rush hour;
- heavy rain, common between April and July;
- hotel stops, if you take a shared transfer.
For return flights, leave Porto de Galinhas with time to spare. Navigation apps with real-time traffic help you set the departure time.
Arrival checklist
- Full address of your accommodation saved on your phone, available without signal.
- Transfer confirmation, with the driver’s name and meeting point.
- Payment method sorted for a taxi or app.
- Water and a light snack, in case the trip takes longer than expected.
