Day trip from Porto de Galinhas to Recife and Olinda

A day of culture away from the beach: Old Recife in the morning and Olinda in the afternoon, with tips on order, timing and safety.

Updated on October 5, 2026 ✓ Information checked on October 5, 2026 adapted from the Portuguese original

A day away from the beach is very rewarding in Pernambuco. Recife, the state capital, and Olinda lie north of Porto de Galinhas and bring together colonial history, frevo (Pernambuco’s signature Carnival music and dance) and museums. It is a good choice for a cloudy day or when low tide falls at an awkward time.

Distance and time

Ipojuca City Hall says Porto de Galinhas is about 60 km from Recife International Airport (REC), roughly an hour via the PE-009 highway. Downtown Recife and Olinda are farther north, which adds road time and city traffic. Expect the round trip to take up a good part of the day. See transportation options in how to get to Porto de Galinhas.

Plan for the day

Time Plan
Early morning Leave Porto de Galinhas
Morning Old Recife: Marco Zero, Rua do Bom Jesus, Kahal Zur Israel synagogue, Paço do Frevo
Lunch Old Recife or Olinda
Afternoon Olinda’s historic center: steep streets, churches and Alto da Sé
Late afternoon Head back, ideally before rush hour

Old Recife

The Recife district, known as Recife Antigo (Old Recife), sits on the island by the port where the city began. The starting point is Marco Zero square, by the river.

A few steps away is Rua do Bom Jesus. Here stands the Kahal Zur Israel synagogue, considered the first in the Americas, from the 17th-century Dutch period. Today it is a Jewish cultural center. Recife City Hall included it in the Recife Sagrado project.

Paço do Frevo is dedicated to the Pernambuco rhythm, inscribed by UNESCO in 2012 as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Confirm opening days and hours on the official channels before you go.

Olinda, a World Heritage Site

The Historic Centre of Olinda has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1982. The town was founded in 1535 and was tied to the sugarcane cycle. After it was sacked by the Dutch, its current street plan took shape mainly in the 18th century, according to UNESCO. The ensemble was listed by IPHAN, Brazil’s national heritage institute, in 1968.

Highlights mentioned by Wikipedia include:

  • the Convent of São Francisco, said to be the oldest Franciscan convent in Brazil;
  • the Monastery of São Bento;
  • the Sé Cathedral, at Alto da Sé, with views over Recife;
  • the Carmo Church.

Olinda City Hall has installed tourist signage at the World Heritage attractions, which helps you explore at a relaxed pace. The streets are steep. Wear comfortable shoes and bring water.

How to get there

The three most practical options are a rental car, an organized tour and a driver hired for the day. By car, you control the timing, but you have to deal with traffic and parking in Old Recife and on Olinda’s steep streets. An organized tour takes care of transportation but follows a fixed itinerary. Ask beforehand which stops are included and how long you will spend in each city.

Safety

In central areas, keep your phone and valuables out of sight. Get around during the day and use a ride-hailing app or taxi between neighborhoods. More guidance in Porto de Galinhas safety.

When to fit it in

Do the day trip on a day with high tide in the morning or with bad weather. On trips of four days or more, it fits without sacrificing the pools: see the 4-day itinerary. Other ideas for cloudy days are in Porto de Galinhas on rainy days, and all outings are in Porto de Galinhas tours.

Frequently asked questions

Can I see Recife and Olinda on the same day from Porto de Galinhas?

Yes, as long as you leave early and choose just a few sights in each city. The drive to the metropolitan area takes part of the morning, and Recife traffic can delay your return.

Is Olinda a World Heritage Site?

Yes. The Historic Centre of Olinda was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1982.

Which city should I visit first?

A good order is Old Recife in the morning, when museums and cultural centers open, and Olinda in the afternoon, ending at Alto da Sé. Confirm opening hours beforehand.

Is the day trip worth it on a rainy day?

Yes. Museums and cultural centers in Old Recife are indoor activities. Olinda's steep streets get slippery in the rain, so wear sturdy shoes.
