4-day Porto de Galinhas itinerary
Four balanced days: beach, pools, a day of culture in Recife and Olinda and a calm-sea morning before you leave.
Updated on October 5, 2026 ✓ Information checked on October 5, 2026 adapted from the Portuguese original
With four days, the trip has room to breathe. You can do the pools calmly, see the southern beaches and still have a full day for Recife and Olinda. The culture day is your wild card: slot it in when the tide or weather does not favor the beach.
Overview
| Day | Theme | Flexible? |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Arrival with a stop at Calhetas | Not much |
| 2 | Natural pools and Maracaípe | Needs low tide |
| 3 | Recife and Olinda day trip | Yes, it is the wild card |
| 4 | Muro Alto and departure | Not much |
Day 1: arrival via Cabo de Santo Agostinho
| Time | Plan |
|---|---|
| Morning | Arrive at Recife airport (REC) |
| Afternoon | Stop at Calhetas, in Cabo de Santo Agostinho, and continue to Porto de Galinhas |
| Evening | First stroll around the village |
Cabo de Santo Agostinho is on the way between Recife and Ipojuca (the municipality Porto de Galinhas belongs to). Calhetas is a small cove surrounded by rocks and coconut palms, with calm, clear water, according to Wikipedia. If your flight lands late, skip the stop and go straight there. Day 2: pools and Maracaípe
| Time | Plan |
|---|---|
| Morning | Jangada (traditional raft boat) to the natural pools at low tide |
| Afternoon | Maracaípe Beach and a walk to the Pontal |
| Late afternoon | Sunset at Pontal de Maracaípe |
For this day, choose the better morning low tide between days 2 and 3. Ipojuca City Hall recommends going to the pools at that time and checking the tide table first. Do not step on the coral and do not feed the fish.
Day 3: Recife and Olinda
| Time | Plan |
|---|---|
| Morning | Old Recife: Marco Zero, Rua do Bom Jesus and museums |
| Afternoon | Olinda’s historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1982 |
| Evening | Back to Porto de Galinhas |
Leave early and come back before rush hour. Churches and museums have their own opening hours; confirm beforehand. The step-by-step guide is in Recife and Olinda day trip.
If the morning low tide is better on day 3 than on day 2, swap the two days.
Day 4: Muro Alto and departure
| Time | Plan |
|---|---|
| Morning | Muro Alto Beach: swimming, kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding |
| Afternoon | Lunch and leave for the airport |
| Evening | Flight home |
Muro Alto is north of the village, toward the airport. Its wall of reefs forms a pool of calm water, according to the city hall. It makes a good last morning because it shortens the final drive. Leave plenty of time for your flight.
Adjusting to the tide
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Good low tide only on day 3 | Swap days 2 and 3 |
| Low tide only in the afternoon | Maracaípe in the morning, pools in the afternoon |
| Murky water on day 2 | Try again on the morning of day 4 instead of Muro Alto |
The official forecast is the Brazilian Navy’s for Porto de Suape. See how to use it in the tide table.
Getting around
This itinerary works best with a car, because of the stop at Calhetas and the day in Recife and Olinda. Without a car, replace Calhetas with a direct transfer and do the day trip on an organized tour or with a driver. On day 4, Muro Alto is in the direction of the airport, which cuts road time on the last day. Compare options in Recife airport to Porto de Galinhas.
If it rains
The Recife and Olinda day is already the main rainy-day alternative, with museums and cultural centers. If it rains on more than one day, see Porto de Galinhas on rainy days. In Olinda, the steep streets get slippery; wear sturdy shoes.
More time?
The 5-day itinerary adds Carneiros Beach. With less time, use the 3-day itinerary.
