3-day Porto de Galinhas itinerary

Three days for a first visit: a day in the village, a day of pools and northern beaches, a day in the south with Maracaípe and the Pontal.

Updated on October 5, 2026 ✓ Information checked on October 5, 2026 adapted from the Portuguese original

Three days is the most common length for a first visit. You can see the pools, the northern beaches and Maracaípe in the south without rushing. The order of the days depends on the tide table: first find out on which morning the tide will be low and build the rest around it.

Overview

Day Theme Ideal morning tide
1 Arrival, the village and the main beach Any
2 Natural pools and a buggy ride north Low
3 Maracaípe, seahorses and the Pontal Any

Day 1: arrival and the village

Time Plan
Morning Arrive at Recife airport (REC) and drive down the PE-009 highway
Afternoon First swim at Porto de Galinhas Beach
Evening The village: chicken sculptures, handicrafts and live music

Use the afternoon to get to know the beachfront. Note where the jangadeiros (raft boatmen) are and ask how departures to the pools work. That saves time the next morning. Ipojuca City Hall (Ipojuca is the municipality Porto de Galinhas belongs to) reports water around 27 °C (about 81 °F) all year.

Day 2: pools and northern beaches

Time Plan
Morning Jangada (traditional raft boat) to the natural pools at low tide
Afternoon Buggy to Cupe and Muro Alto
Evening Dinner in the village

This is the most important day. Get to the beachfront before low tide so you do not miss the best of it. Wear proper reef footwear, do not step on the coral and do not feed the fish, as the city hall asks.

In the afternoon, the buggy takes you to the northern beaches. Muro Alto is about 9 km from the village, according to the city hall. Its wall of reefs forms a pool of calm water, good for kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding.

Day 3: Maracaípe in the south

Time Plan
Morning Maracaípe Beach: waves, surfers, beginner lessons
Afternoon Jangada ride in the estuary to see the seahorses
Late afternoon Sunset at Pontal de Maracaípe and head back

Maracaípe is the wave beach, about 3 km from the village. At the Pontal, the river meets the sea, and jangadas travel through the mangroves to show the seahorses. A study in the Revista Brasileira de Ecoturismo pointed to a population decline linked to animals being repeatedly caught for photos. Ask to see the animal in the water, without holding it.

Adjusting to the tide

  • Early low tide on day 1: if you arrive the night before, do the pools on the first day and move the village to the evening of day 2.
  • Low tide only in the afternoon on all three days: flip day 2. Buggy in the morning, pools in the afternoon.
  • Rough sea or murky water: swap the pools for Muro Alto and try again the next day.

If it rains

Swap that day’s beach for an indoor activity. The village has shops and cafés, and the Ipojuca historic center is an option away from the coast. See more ideas in Porto de Galinhas on rainy days.

Getting around

The village, the main beach and the pools are a few steps apart. For Muro Alto and Maracaípe, the buggy covers day 2, and a taxi or ride-hailing app works on day 3. If you rent a car, it is only worth it for arrival and departure, or for more freedom in the south. See options in how to get to Porto de Galinhas.

With children

Choose calm-sea mornings and shorten the buggy ride. Muro Alto usually works well for little ones. More tips in Porto de Galinhas with kids.

Next step

With one more day, you can add the Recife and Olinda day trip: see the 4-day itinerary. To compare all the outings, use Porto de Galinhas tours.

Frequently asked questions

On which day should I do the natural pools?

On the day when low tide falls in the morning. If that happens on the first day, swap the order and leave the village for the late afternoon.

Can I fit the buggy into the same day as the pools?

Yes, if you do the pools in the morning. An afternoon buggy ride covers the northern or southern beaches, and you agree on the stops with the driver.

Are three days enough to go to Carneiros?

They are, but you sacrifice Maracaípe and the buggy. If Carneiros is a priority, see the 5-day itinerary, which fits the trip in without rushing.

Can the seahorse ride be done at any time?

Times vary with the boatman and river conditions. Confirm on the spot at Pontal de Maracaípe, and choose someone who shows the animal without taking it out of the water.
