Porto de Galinhas itinerary: how to plan around the tide

The method for fitting pools, beaches and tours into the right time slot, plus a table with all the ready-made itineraries.

In Porto de Galinhas, the clock that rules is the tide. The natural pools appear when it goes out, and that time changes from one day to the next. A good itinerary starts with the tide table for your dates, not with a list of attractions.

The method in four steps

  1. Download the tide table. The official forecast comes from the Brazilian Navy, for Porto de Suape, the nearest port. See how to read it in the Porto de Galinhas tide table.
  2. Mark the days with low tide in the morning. They are the best for the natural pools, as Ipojuca City Hall recommends (Ipojuca is the municipality Porto de Galinhas belongs to).
  3. Fit the long outings into the other days. Carneiros, Santo Aleixo and the Recife and Olinda day trip take up a whole day.
  4. Keep one day flexible. Rain or rough seas change plans. Have an indoor alternative ready.

What to do at each tide

Tide Good for
Low Natural pools by jangada (traditional raft boat), snorkeling, the reefs of Muro Alto and Serrambi
Rising or falling Beach walks, buggy, Pontal de Maracaípe
High Surfing in Maracaípe, the village, shopping, the historic center, day trips

Ready-made itineraries

Itinerary Best for Highlights
2 days A weekend Pools, the village, the Pontal at sunset
3 days A short first visit Pools, buggy along the beaches, Maracaípe
4 days A balanced trip Includes Recife and Olinda
5 days Beach plus a long outing Includes Carneiros Beach
6 days A relaxed pace Santo Aleixo, diving and a free day
7 days A full week All the beaches, two day trips, free time

Common mistakes

  • Booking the pools before checking the tide. The trip may fall at a time when the reefs are covered.
  • Filling every day with tours. Long drives to Carneiros or Recife are tiring. Alternate them with beach days near your accommodation.
  • Leaving your only good morning for the last day. If the water is murky, there is no other chance.
  • Forgetting the trip to the airport. Porto de Galinhas is about 60 km from Recife airport (REC), according to Ipojuca City Hall. Add metropolitan-area traffic.

Where you stay helps

Staying near the village saves travel time on low-tide mornings. If you prefer calm water, you can stay to the north; if you surf, to the south. Compare in where to stay.

If it rains

Use the day for the Recife and Olinda day trip or for the indoor ideas in Porto de Galinhas on rainy days. To choose the sunniest season, see when to go.

Frequently asked questions

How many days should I spend in Porto de Galinhas?

Three to four days let you catch good low tides and do the main outings. With five to seven days, you can add Carneiros, Santo Aleixo and the Recife and Olinda day trip.

Why plan the itinerary around the tide?

Because the natural pools only appear at low tide. Ipojuca City Hall recommends going at that time, preferably in the morning, and checking the tide table.

What if low tide is in the late afternoon?

Flip the day: open beach, buggy or the village in the morning, and the pools in the afternoon. If low tide falls close to nightfall, use another day of your trip for the pools.

Do the itineraries work at any time of year?

The structure works all year, but tide times change daily. Adjust each day to the official tide table for your travel dates.
