5-day Porto de Galinhas itinerary

Five days with two highlights: the village pools and a full day at Carneiros, plus southern Ipojuca by buggy.

Updated on October 5, 2026 ✓ Information checked on October 5, 2026 adapted from the Portuguese original

Five days let you leave Ipojuca (the municipality Porto de Galinhas belongs to) without giving up the pools. This itinerary has two days that depend on low tide: the village pools and Carneiros Beach. Choose those two first in the tide table. The other three fall into place around them.

Overview

Day Theme Needs low tide?
1 Arrival and the village No
2 Pools, Cupe and Merepe Yes, in the morning
3 Carneiros Beach Yes, around midday
4 Buggy south: Maracaípe, the Pontal and Serrambi It helps
5 Free morning and departure No

Day 1: arrival

Time Plan
Afternoon Arrival and check-in
Late afternoon A walk along the main beachfront
Evening Porto de Galinhas village and dinner

An easy day. Use it to confirm the departure time for the next morning with the jangadeiro (raft boatman) and to book the Carneiros trip, if you are going with an agency.

Day 2: pools and the northern beaches on foot

Time Plan
Morning Natural pools by jangada (traditional raft boat) at low tide
Afternoon A walk along the sand toward Merepe and Cupe
Evening Free

The pools need low tide, preferably in the morning, according to Ipojuca City Hall. In the afternoon, as the tide rises, walk north along the strip of sand. Bring water and a hat, and come back by taxi or ride-hailing app if you get tired.

Day 3: Carneiros Beach

Time Plan
Morning Leave early for Tamandaré
Midday The Carneiros pools at low tide and the São Benedito church
Afternoon A swim in the Formoso River estuary and head back

Carneiros Beach is in Tamandaré, farther south. The 18th-century São Benedito church is among the tourist attractions listed by Tamandaré City Hall. The reefs are in the Costa dos Corais Environmental Protection Area, a federal unit run by ICMBio. Do not step on the coral. Access details in beaches near Porto de Galinhas.

Day 4: the south by buggy

Time Plan
Morning Buggy to Maracaípe and Serrambi
Afternoon Jangada ride at the Pontal to see the seahorses
Late afternoon Sunset at Pontal de Maracaípe

Ipojuca City Hall mentions the buggy as a way to see Maracaípe and Serrambi. Serrambi is quieter and has reef stretches that are best at low tide. At the Pontal, choose operators who show the seahorses without taking them out of the water.

Day 5: free morning and departure

Time Plan
Morning A second chance at the pools, if the tide allows, or shopping in the village
Afternoon Leave for the airport

If the water was murky on day 2, this morning is your backup. Otherwise, use it for some handicraft shopping.

Adjusting to the tide

  • Low tide too early for Carneiros: leave even earlier or swap the day with the buggy.
  • Afternoon low tide on day 2: walk north in the morning, pools in the afternoon.
  • No good tide for Carneiros: replace the trip with Recife and Olinda, which does not depend on the sea.

The official forecast is the Brazilian Navy’s for Porto de Suape. See how to read it in the tide table.

With children

Carneiros and the buggy are long days for little ones. Bring snacks, water and extra sunscreen. On day 2, shorten the walk north and stay on the main beach. On day 4, the seahorse ride usually goes down well, but remember the animal should stay in the water. More ideas in Porto de Galinhas with kids.

If it rains

Carneiros in the rain loses its color and comfort. Reschedule it for another day and use the rainy day for the Recife and Olinda day trip. More ideas in Porto de Galinhas on rainy days.

One more day?

The 6-day itinerary adds Santo Aleixo and diving, at a slower pace.

Frequently asked questions

Does Carneiros also depend on the tide?

The pools at Carneiros form on the reefs at low tide. For this trip, choose a day with low tide between late morning and early afternoon.

Is it better to go to Carneiros by car or on an organized tour?

Both work. By car, be aware that access by land crosses private properties, with restaurants that charge a minimum spend. On a tour, ask what is included.

Are five days enough for Recife and Olinda too?

They are, if you give up the buggy ride south. The 6-day itinerary fits everything in at a calmer pace.
