Porto de Galinhas is a beach in the municipality of Ipojuca, on the southern coast of the Brazilian state of Pernambuco. Ipojuca City Hall says it is about 60 km south of Recife International Airport (REC), roughly an hour by car via the PE-009 highway. What you do here depends first and foremost on one thing: the time of low tide.
Start with the tide
The natural pools appear between the reefs when the tide goes out. The city hall recommends going at that time, preferably in the morning, and checking the tide table first. The official reference is the Brazilian Navy forecast for Porto de Suape. See how to read the times in the Porto de Galinhas tide table.
Once you know the time, the logic is simple: low tide for reefs and pools; high tide for open beaches, land tours, the village and the city.

Sea and beaches
The natural pools are the postcard image. You reach them by jangada and swim among fish and coral. The city hall asks you not to touch the coral, not to feed the fish and to pick up your trash.
To the north, Muro Alto Beach has a wall of reefs that forms a large pool of calm water. To the south, Maracaípe is the surf beach. Compare them all in Porto de Galinhas beaches.
