Boa Viagem is the best-known city beach in Recife, the capital of Pernambuco, outside Ipojuca (the municipality that Porto de Galinhas belongs to). It is in the city’s South Zone, between Pina Beach to the north and Piedade Beach to the south, which is already in Jaboatão dos Guararapes. According to Wikipedia, the beachfront is about 8 km long. If you are staying in Porto de Galinhas, it is not a beach for a full day in the sea, but rather a stop on the way to or from Recife.
What it is
According to Wikipedia, part of the beach is protected by a reef barrier. At low tide, pools of warm, clear water form. The reefs are fairly flat and wide, but slippery.
The beachfront has standardized kiosks, a bike lane, a jogging track, showers, sports courts and exercise equipment, also according to Wikipedia. The seafront avenue is lined with high-rise buildings, hotels, bars and restaurants. We do not name businesses or give prices.
The name comes from the church dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem (Our Lady of Good Voyage), built in the early 18th century, according to English Wikipedia. The beach was a summer retreat before becoming one of the city’s most densely populated neighborhoods.
Where it is and how to get there from Porto de Galinhas
Ipojuca City Hall states that Porto de Galinhas is about 60 km from Recife airport, around an hour via the PE-009 highway. Boa Viagem is in Recife’s South Zone, past Cabo de Santo Agostinho and Jaboatão dos Guararapes when you come from the south. Allow for city traffic both ways.

When to go
The pools only appear at low tide, which is also the time CEMIT recommends for swimming in reef-sheltered areas. Check the Porto de Galinhas tide table to choose your timing.
CPRH, the Pernambuco environmental agency, monitors water quality at points along Boa Viagem and publishes weekly beach water quality bulletins. Check the latest bulletin before going in the sea.
Who it suits
- Travelers arriving in or leaving from Recife who want to see the beachfront.
- People on the Recife and Olinda day trip who want to end the day at the beach.
- Anyone who likes walking or cycling along the promenade.
For full days in the sea, the beaches in Ipojuca are a better fit: see Porto de Galinhas beaches.
Environmental and safety tips
Boa Viagem is inside the CEMIT attention zone. CEMIT is the Pernambuco state committee that monitors shark incidents. The zone covers 33 km, from Farol Beach, in Olinda, to Paiva Beach, in Cabo. In that stretch, State Decree 21,402/1999 bans water sports such as surfing.
In June 2026, Diario de Pernambuco reported that CEMIT had recorded 84 incidents since 1992 in the state, 25 of them in Boa Viagem. In January 2025, the committee installed 150 new bilingual signs along the 33 km.
CEMIT’s recommendations for safe swimming:
- avoid open sea, dawn and dusk, river mouths, high tide, and deep or murky water;
- do not go in the sea alone, after drinking, while bleeding or wearing shiny objects;
- prefer low tide in reef-sheltered areas.
Do not step on living organisms on the reefs and do not feed the fish.
How to fit it into your itinerary
Boa Viagem takes an hour or two: on your arrival or departure day via the airport, or at the end of the Recife and Olinda day trip. If you want other beaches along the way, see the Cabo de Santo Agostinho beaches in beaches near Porto de Galinhas, such as Paiva Beach.
Practical tips
