Paiva lies on the northern part of the coast of Cabo de Santo Agostinho, a municipality in the Recife Metropolitan Region, outside Ipojuca (the municipality that Porto de Galinhas belongs to). According to Wikipedia, it is about 28 km from Recife and has a landscape of dense coconut groves, blue sea and pale sand. If you are staying in Porto de Galinhas, it is the Cabo beach closest to the state capital.

What it is

Wikipedia describes Paiva as having a dense strip of coconut palms and reefs that form small natural pools. Swimming is best at low tide. English Wikipedia adds Atlantic Forest, crystal-clear water and pools among the rocks.

Every May 1, since 1987, the beach hosts the Festa da Lavadeira (Washerwoman’s Festival), which Wikipedia describes as one of the region’s largest cultural events. According to Brasil de Fato, the festival blends Candomblé religious traditions and folk culture, with groups from across Pernambuco and other states in the Northeast.

Where it is and how to get there from Porto de Galinhas

Cabo de Santo Agostinho borders Ipojuca to the north, according to Wikipedia. Paiva is in the northern part of Cabo, closer to Recife. The exact distance from Porto de Galinhas village has not been confirmed by an official source.

The main access is the Paiva road system, made up of the PE-024 highway and the Wilson Campos Júnior bridge. According to Folha de Pernambuco, it is run by a concessionaire in a public-private partnership with the Pernambuco state government and has a toll, with different rates on weekdays and weekends. Rates are adjusted periodically; check before you go.

When to go

The pools between the reefs appear at low tide. Plan your timing with the Porto de Galinhas tide table. CEMIT also recommends swimming at lower tide in reef-sheltered areas and avoiding the water at high tide.

Who it suits

  • Travelers who want coconut groves and a quieter beach near Recife.
  • People heading home via the airport who want one last beach.
  • Anyone interested in folk culture, on May 1.

Environmental and safety tips

Paiva is the southern edge of the CEMIT attention zone. CEMIT is the Pernambuco state committee that monitors shark incidents. The zone covers 33 km, from Farol Beach, in Olinda, to Paiva. In that stretch, State Decree 21,402/1999 bans water sports such as surfing. In January 2025, according to Diario de Pernambuco, CEMIT installed 150 new bilingual signs along those 33 km.

CEMIT’s recommendations for safe swimming:

  • avoid open sea, dawn and dusk, river mouths, high tide, and deep or murky water;
  • do not go in the sea alone, after drinking, while bleeding or wearing shiny objects;
  • prefer low-tide hours in reef-sheltered areas.

Also, do not step on the reefs and do not feed the fish.

How to fit it into your itinerary

Paiva works as a half-day stop on the way between Porto de Galinhas and Recife, as suggested in the guide to beaches near Porto de Galinhas. Combine it with neighboring Itapuama Beach or make Paiva your last beach before heading to Recife airport.

Practical tips

  • Go at low tide, when the reefs form small pools.
  • Read the CEMIT signs on the beachfront and avoid open sea and murky water.
  • Have cash or a card ready for the toll on the Paiva road system.
  • Combine Paiva with Itapuama, the neighboring beach to the south.
  • On May 1, the Festa da Lavadeira fills the beach: plan for traffic.
