While the village beach is known for its calm pools, Maracaípe is known for its waves. Ipojuca City Hall presents it as one of the best surfing beaches in Brazil. The beach lies about 3 km south of Porto de Galinhas village.

The break

Maracaípe Beach is open sea, without the reef protection that calms Muro Alto and the main beach. That is why it gets waves more often than its neighbors. Size and quality change with the swell, the wind and the tide. Check a surf forecast before you go and look up the tide in the Brazilian Navy tables for Porto de Suape.

Profile What to do in Maracaípe
Experienced surfer The main break on swell days
Beginner A lesson with an instructor, on a smaller-sea day
Non-surfer Watch from the sand, bodyboard with care, walk to the Pontal

Competitions

Maracaípe has a history of championships. Ipojuca City Hall states that the beach hosts national and international competitions and stands out in the sport. In 2000, the beach hosted the International Surfing Association (ISA) World Surfing Games, according to historical records of the event.

The competition calendar changes every year. To find out if there is an event during your trip, check the state surfing federation’s and Ipojuca City Hall’s channels close to the date.

Surf lessons

Schools in the area offer lessons for people who have never stood on a board. Before booking, ask:

  • whether the instructor is trained and experienced with beginners;
  • whether the lesson includes a suitable board, a rash guard and instruction on land;
  • how many students there are per instructor;
  • what happens if the sea is too big on the day.

There is no official price list for lessons. Compare and ask for the total price in writing.

Gear and sun

A rash guard or protective shirt prevents sunburn on your back and board rash. Use water-resistant sunscreen and reapply when you come out. Bring water and a snack, because a session in the sea is more tiring than it looks. If you rent a board, ask for a bigger, more stable one for your first few times. Instructors usually recommend foam boards for beginners.

The Pontal and sunset

After surfing, head to Pontal de Maracaípe, where the river meets the sea. The city hall mentions the late afternoon there as a meeting point for locals and tourists. It is also where the jangadas (traditional raft boats) leave to see the seahorses.

Where to stay if surfing is your focus

Surfers usually prefer to stay near Maracaípe to catch the sea early. Compare the areas in where to stay in Porto de Galinhas.
