Many travelers do not really go “to Porto de Galinhas”: they go to Muro Alto. The beach has a wall of reefs (muro alto means “high wall”) that forms a calm-water natural pool about 3 km long, according to Wikipedia, and it is lined with large resorts and gated communities. So the question is whether to sleep there or in the village. This guide helps you decide, without recommending specific hotels.

The short answer

If you… Stay in
are traveling with young children and want calm water all day Muro Alto
want an all-inclusive resort and do not plan to go out much Muro Alto or Cupe
want to do everything on foot, eat out and go out at night Porto de Galinhas village
plan to visit the natural pools by jangada several times The village
will not rent a car and want to see several beaches The village
want both Split your stay: part in Muro Alto, part in the village

What you gain by staying in Muro Alto

  • The natural pool on your doorstep. The reef wall holds back the waves, and the water behind it stays calm, warm and clear, especially at low tide, as Ipojuca City Hall describes. No jangada (traditional wooden sailboat) or tour schedule needed.
  • Family-friendly facilities. The area is full of resorts and gated communities, and Ipojuca City Hall considers the beach ideal for young children.
  • Activities without leaving the beach. Kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, jet skiing, banana boat rides and snorkeling are among the activities listed by Ipojuca City Hall.
  • More peace and quiet. Away from the bustle and noise of the village on high-season nights.

What you give up

  • The village on foot. The center of Porto de Galinhas is about 9 km away, according to Ipojuca City Hall. Eating out, shopping and the jangada departures to the natural pools all depend on transport.
  • The freedom to walk along the beach at any tide. According to a Diário de Pernambuco report on the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office investigation, in some stretches of Muro Alto high tide covers the entire beach and pedestrians cannot get through.
  • Budget options. The area is mostly resorts and condos. If you are looking for a simple guesthouse (pousada), there is more choice in the village.

Staying in the village, you can still enjoy Muro Alto

The beach is public: free access is guaranteed by Law 7,661/1988. Pedestrian access points, however, are few and far apart, according to the inspection cited by Diário de Pernambuco, with gaps of 600 to 910 meters between them. In May 2026, according to the same newspaper, a court ordered Ipojuca City Hall to clear, signpost and monitor these access points. For a day in Muro Alto from the village:

  1. pick a low-tide day on the tide table;
  2. go by car, taxi, ride-hailing app or buggy;
  3. go in through a public access lane or book a day-use, an option Ipojuca City Hall lists among those in the area (rules and prices vary by property).

Arriving from the airport

Muro Alto is on the way for anyone coming from Recife. According to Ipojuca City Hall, it is about 50 km via the PE-009 from Guararapes International Airport, roughly 1 hour by car. Transfers, taxis, ride-hailing and rental cars are compared in Recife airport to Porto de Galinhas.

Split your stay: the best of both

On trips of 5 days or more, a good strategy is to split your accommodation:

  • first days in the village, to visit the natural pools by jangada and explore the center and the southern beaches;
  • last days in Muro Alto, to relax in the natural pool before heading home, already close to the road to the airport.

The 2- to 7-day itineraries show how to fit low tide into each part of the trip.

Muro Alto, Cupe or Merepe?

All three are in northern Ipojuca, between the Suape complex and the village:

  • Muro Alto: the reef wall and the large natural pool. The obvious choice for small children.
  • Cupe: Muro Alto’s neighbor, also with resorts, but with open sea and strong waves: swim only while watching the flags.
  • Merepe: between Cupe and the village, quieter, with open sea and waves.

The comparison of every area, from north to south, is in where to stay in Porto de Galinhas.
