The Oficina Francisco Brennand is the studio-museum of Pernambuco artist Francisco Brennand, in the Várzea neighborhood of Recife. It lies far from the center, in a green area, and brings together sculptures, murals, paintings and ceramic pieces in a set of galleries, temples and gardens. It is an art alternative to the classic Recife and Olinda day trip.

A little history

Francisco Brennand was born in Recife on June 11, 1927, and died in the same city on December 19, 2019, according to Wikipedia. The Oficina was created in 1971 on the ruins of the Cerâmica São João da Várzea, a brick and tile factory founded by the artist’s father in 1917. The land belonged to the old Engenho Santos Cosme e Damião sugar mill.

According to Wikipedia, the collection has about 2,000 works. The central theme of Brennand’s work is the origin of life and the eternity of things.

What to see

Wikipedia lists among the spaces the Accademia, an art gallery, the Central Temple, the Temple of Sacrifice, an amphitheater, the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception, designed by architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha, and gardens by Burle Marx.

The Sculpture Hall (Salão das Esculturas) was created in 1971 to house the artist’s ceramic output. According to Folha de Pernambuco, it was closed for 18 months after damage from the May 2022 rains and reopened in October 2023, with more than 500 works in ten rooms.

In August 2026, the Oficina opened the artist’s studio to the public as part of the Brennand centenary cycle, celebrated in June 2027, according to Diario de Pernambuco. The same article mentioned a traveling edition of the São Paulo Biennial on site until October 18, 2026. Check the current program on the official website.

The official website also says there is a café and a shop open during museum hours.

How to get there from Porto de Galinhas
