The Ricardo Brennand Institute is a non-profit cultural institution in the Várzea neighborhood of Recife. It occupies a group of castle-style buildings surrounded by gardens and holds collections of arms and armor, painting and rare books. It is one of the art and history options for travelers leaving Porto de Galinhas for a day away from the beach.
A little history
The institute was created by collector Ricardo Coimbra de Almeida Brennand and opened in 2002, according to its official website. It covers 77,603 m² on the lands of the old Engenho São João sugar mill. Wikipedia records its opening to the public on September 12, 2002.
What to see
According to the official website, the complex consists of:
- the Castelo São João Museum, with the armory: more than 3,000 pieces, including bladed weapons, armor and decorative arts. Highlights include a Maximilian field armor for horse and rider, dated to around 1515;
- the Pinacoteca (picture gallery), opened in September 2002, with long-term exhibitions such as “Frans Post e o Brasil Holandês” (Frans Post and Dutch Brazil) and “O Oitocentos Brasileiro” (the Brazilian 1800s);
- the Gallery, opened in 2011;
- the José Antônio Gonsalves de Mello Library, with rare works such as Rerum per Octennium in Brasilia, by Gaspar van Baerle (1647), and Historia Naturalis Brasiliae, by Piso and Marcgrave (1648);
- the Chapel of Nossa Senhora das Graças and the sculpture gardens.
Wikipedia notes that the institute has the world’s largest collection of paintings by Frans Post, the Dutch painter who portrayed Pernambuco in the 17th century.
