Olinda sits right next to Recife, to the north, and has one of the best-known colonial ensembles in Brazil. The Historic Centre of Olinda has been on UNESCO’s World Heritage List since 1982. Coming from Porto de Galinhas, it is usually the second half of the Recife and Olinda day trip, after Old Recife.

A little history

The town was founded in 1535 by Duarte Coelho, the Portuguese grantee of the captaincy, and was tied to the sugarcane cycle. In the 17th century, it was occupied and destroyed during Dutch rule. According to UNESCO, the current street plan took shape mainly in the 18th century, after that sacking.

The ensemble was listed by IPHAN in 1968, according to the institute itself. Wikipedia also notes that Olinda was declared a National Monument in 1980 and that about a third of the municipality’s area is protected.

What to see

Among the highlights cited by Wikipedia:

  • the São Francisco Convent, from 1585, described as the oldest Franciscan convent in Brazil;
  • the São Bento Monastery;
  • the Sé Cathedral, on Alto da Sé, with a view of Recife;
  • the Carmo Church;
  • the Graça Church, the former chapel of the Jesuit college;
  • the Church of Nossa Senhora do Rosário dos Pretos.

Besides the churches, the historic center is home to artists’ and craftspeople’s studios, according to English Wikipedia. Olinda City Hall has installed tourist signage at the World Heritage sights, which helps you find your way on foot.

Carnival

Olinda’s carnival takes place freely in the streets and is known for its giant puppets, according to English Wikipedia. If your trip coincides with carnival, plan your transport in advance.

How to get there from Porto de Galinhas

Olinda lies north of Recife. Ipojuca City Hall says Porto de Galinhas is about 60 km from Recife Airport, close to an hour via the PE-009. From the airport to Olinda you have to cross the city, and traffic can be heavy. Transport options are in how to get to Porto de Galinhas.

When to go and how much time to allow

Olinda works well on a high-tide or overcast day in Porto de Galinhas. Allow an afternoon for the essentials. The climb to Alto da Sé is best in late afternoon, with softer light.

Practical tips

  • Bring water and sunscreen: the hillside streets are tiring in strong sun.
  • Church, monastery and museum hours change. Check official channels before you go.
  • In busy areas, keep your phone and valuables put away. See more in Porto de Galinhas safety.
  • Head back before rush hour so you don’t arrive late in Porto de Galinhas.

How to fit it into your itinerary

The most practical order is Old Recife in the morning and Olinda in the afternoon, as shown in the Recife and Olinda day trip. On trips of four days or more, the outing fits in without sacrificing the natural pools: see the 4-day itinerary. If you have a second day for culture, the Várzea museums, such as the Ricardo Brennand Institute, are another option.
