Old Recife (Recife Antigo) is the popular name for the Bairro do Recife, the island where the capital of Pernambuco was born. It sits between the mouths of the Capibaribe and Beberibe rivers and the ocean. It is the natural first stop on the Recife and Olinda day trip from Porto de Galinhas, with squares, colonial streets and cultural centers just a few steps from one another.
A little history
According to Wikipedia, the settlement emerged in the first half of the 16th century as the port of Olinda, shipping out brazilwood and sugar. During Dutch rule, Count Maurice of Nassau laid out the street plan from 1637 onward. When the Dutch left in 1654, the settlement already had about 300 buildings.
The district lost activity after the Port of Suape began operating and was revitalized from the 1990s onward. Since 2000 it has been home to Porto Digital, a technology hub. The architectural, urban and landscape ensemble of Old Recife was listed as heritage by IPHAN in 1998, according to the Federal Prosecution Service in Pernambuco.
What to see
Marco Zero and the Sculpture Park
The starting point is Praça Rio Branco, home to the city’s Marco Zero (ground zero marker), installed in 1938. Set into the square’s pavement is a large compass rose by Cícero Dias, from 1999. Opposite, on the reef that shelters the port, stands the Francisco Brennand Sculpture Park, with the 32-meter Crystal Column, according to Wikipedia. If you want to see more of the artist’s work, visit the Oficina Francisco Brennand, in the Várzea neighborhood.
Rua do Bom Jesus and the Kahal Zur Israel synagogue
On Rua do Bom Jesus stands the Kahal Zur Israel synagogue, considered the first in the Americas and included by Recife City Hall in its Recife Sagrado project. Wikipedia dates its opening to 1637, during the Dutch period. Excavations found a mikveh there, a ritual bath with seven steps. The building now houses the Jewish Historical Archive of Pernambuco.
Paço do Frevo
Paço do Frevo, on Praça do Arsenal da Marinha, has operated since 2014 as a reference center for frevo, Recife’s carnival music and dance, according to its official website. UNESCO inscribed frevo as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2012. According to the official website, in Oct 2026 it was closed on Mondays and open Tuesday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on weekends from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The website also mentions a free-admission and half-price policy. Check before you go.
Other sights mentioned
Wikipedia also lists the Torre Malakoff and Forte do Brum among the district’s attractions. Confirm each one’s opening hours through official channels.
How to get there from Porto de Galinhas
Recife lies north of Porto de Galinhas. Ipojuca City Hall says Porto de Galinhas is about 60 km from Recife Airport, close to an hour via the PE-009 highway. Old Recife lies beyond the airport, so add time for city traffic. Transport options are in how to get to Porto de Galinhas.
When to go and how much time to allow
Old Recife is a good plan for a cloudy day or a morning with high tide. See more ideas in Porto de Galinhas on rainy days. To see the main sights on foot, allow a morning. If you want to go into museums, allow more time.
Practical tips
- Wear comfortable shoes: the visit is on foot, along old cobbled streets.
- Bring water and sunscreen; the Marco Zero square has little shade.
- Museum and cultural center hours change. Check the official websites before setting out.
- Follow the advice in Porto de Galinhas safety, which also applies to central areas.
How to fit it into your itinerary
The most common order is Old Recife in the morning and the Olinda historic center in the afternoon, as in the Recife and Olinda day trip. If you prefer art, swap Olinda for the Brennand family museums in Várzea. To end the day by the sea, Boa Viagem Beach is on the way back.
